Duratuf Premium Electrical Rubber Mat in the USA for High-Voltage Safety

In the United States, electrical insulating mats are a legally mandated item under OSHA. 29 CFR 1910.137 explicitly names ASTM D178 as the national consensus standard deemed to be in compliance with OSHA’s performance requirements for rubber insulating matting. 29 CFR 1910.335(a)(1)(i) requires the use of insulating equipment including mats to protect workers from electrical shock hazards. 29 CFR 1926.97 applies the same requirements to construction operations. All rubber insulating matting used in US workplaces must be marked with the voltage class (Class 0 to Class 4), the type (Type I or Type II), and the manufacturer’s identification. NFPA 70E provides the overarching workplace electrical safety framework within which these mat requirements operate.

The USA is the world’s largest economy and its electrical safety mat demand reflects that scale across every industrial sector. Duke Energy, NextEra Energy, Southern Company, AEP, and Dominion Energy operate some of the world’s largest distribution networks, with distribution substations nationwide requiring ASTM D178-compliant safety matting. The Gulf Coast petrochemical corridor spanning Texas and Louisiana is the largest chemical manufacturing region in the Americas with extensive electrical maintenance requirements. The United States became the world’s largest LNG exporter in 2023,  generating demand for certified electrical safety equipment in their control rooms and switchgear areas. The CHIPS and Science Act (2022) is driving over $52 billion in domestic semiconductor fab investment, each requiring certified electrical safety equipment for new fab utility infrastructure.

Duratuf ASTM D178 electrical insulating mats are type-tested across Class 0 to Class 4, covering working voltages from 1.0 kV to 36.0 kV. Type I mats are available for standard installations. Type II mats with ozone, flame, or oil resistance and are available for petrochemical, refinery, and outdoor environments where these additional properties are specified. IEC 61111:2009 mats are available on request for facilities operating under international parent company specifications or joint venture contracts that reference international norms. Both ranges include type-test certificates and compliance documentation suitable for OSHA PPE compliance records and NFPA 70E program documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.137 explicitly names ASTM D178 as the national consensus standard deemed to be in compliance with OSHA’s performance requirements for rubber insulating matting. This applies to all general industry workplaces under 1910.137 and construction operations under 29 CFR 1926.97. OSHA also requires that all insulating matting be marked with the voltage class, type (Type I or Type II), and manufacturer identification.

Type I mats are the standard specification for most indoor switchgear rooms, substation operator areas, and industrial control panel installations. Type II mats provide additional resistance properties beyond Type I; Type IIA adds ozone resistance, Type IIB adds flame resistance, and Type IIC adds oil resistance. Type II is the correct specification for outdoor switchgear environments, petrochemical facility electrical rooms, and any installation where ozone, flame, or oil exposure is an operating condition.
